Baskerville
This is an exercise publication piece. I am not affiliated with John Baskerville’s estate.
The purpose of this exercise is to draw attention to the attributes that make up Baskerville a timeless typeface.
What follows is the contents of the poster:
English businessman, John Baskerville was a type designer in the early 1700s. He is best remembered for his printing work and typeface design “Baskerville”. The typeface is best described as a transitional style face and one that bridges the gap between old style and modern type design. It is a serif typeface, commonly used for its simplicity and elegance. It’s key features: vertical axis of the thinnest points; high stroke contrast; and nearly-horizontal serifs.
In 1757 Baskerville published an edition of Virgil in his own type, resulting in his prompt employment by the University of Cambridge. His work has been praised around the world, most notably by Benjamin Franklin. John Baskerville’s work in design, printing, and innovative contributions helped define design worldwide.
