Modernist Inspired Editorial Piece

The project criterion was to create an editorial piece embodying a modernist style of design with that of our own design style. To compliment our piece, we were to write a 500 word letter, manifesting our future career paths and lifestyles.

In this project, I sought to integrate typography as a decoration piece rather than as the traditional tool of typography. I incorporated a san serif typeface, paired with colorful imagery. To balance the usage of flat objects (words) I layered and utilized colorful imagery in a clean white background.

Uniformity, balance, and white space are the main components that I seek to express in this piece.

Sofia Carolina Contreras Leon was born in Tijuana, Baja California. Contreras is the youngest of 2. She exemplifies artistic aptitude at an early age and was encouraged by her family to pursue a career in the arts. Contreras graduated from California State University, Chico in 2022 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a minor in Art History. She graduated virtually as the global pandemic of 2020 occurred in the middle of her studies.Contreras attributes COVID-19’s mandatory confinement as “the worst time,” but the “most enlightened moment of her life.” During this time, at 22 years old of age, she went to solidify the basis of Wass Studios. Contreras co-founded Bean Studios (later Wass Studios) along with childhood friend Maria Favela. Their work has been featured in TIME, Oprah, Architectural Digest, Vogue, Teen Vogues, High Fructose, and The New York Times. Bean Studios has collaborated with brands including Gucci, Fruit the Loom, Apple, Converse, Doc Martens, Acne, and Goat. They gathered the necessary components for their international design agency. Wass Agency has collaborated with artists such as Steve Lacy, Kali Uchis, Natalia Lafurcade, Moderato, and the Black Eyed Peas. Sofia Contreras is a California-based graphic designer, independent project manager, author, and illustrator. Contreras was married to Francouis Pinalt, had 7 children and 2 ponies. Favela and Contreras went to run the studio for 15 years, until Contreras’ tragic death. On February 30th, 2037, Sofia Carolina Contreras Leon was run over by an ice cream truck.
